Customs Brokers: Ultimate Guide

Many independent businesses PAY FORTUNE to hire licensed customs brokers. Others FORGET to hire one at all.

So, they either LOSE money or waste time processing documentation themselves.

Brokerage services are one of OUR expertise as a freight forwarder.

We’ve created a UNIVERSAL GUIDE to help YOU know everything about customs brokers. Including what they are and WHY they’re important. You save energy by doing extra research yourself!

You don’t want to miss out!

Customs Brokers

What is a Customs Broker?

A CUSTOMS BROKER is a middleman between importers/exporters and the government. Its PURPOSE is to help you process documents. And adhere to International shipping rules and regulations.

YOU successfully import/export your package without any problems. Or extra customs fees.

Note: A BROKER can be an INDIVIDUALLY LICENSED OFFICER or a group of them.

When do you need Customs Brokers?

There are VARIOUS scenarios when hiring a broker is ideal. Let me break down each of them for you.

#1: If you’re an inexperienced International importer.

You must hire a customs broker if you’re an inexperienced International importer. Because the PROCESS of importing goods is TEDIOUS.

You most likely won’t complete ALL the requirements without customs brokerage experience.

Every COUNTRY has different rules and regulations for importation. The rules in CANADA are different from the US. You’ll be TOO OVERWHELMED to know every piece of information at once.

A broker ensures that your cargo’s documents are in compliance with the guideline. Importing becomes a STRESS-FREE PROCESS, even for new businesses.

#2: If you want to save time

So, you ALREADY know the ins and outs to TRANSACT CUSTOMS BUSINESS. But YOU want to save time for OTHER crucial aspects of your company/store.

A broker would come in HANDY in this situation. YOU won’t need to process anything on your own. Because someone with IMPORTATION expertise will be responsible for your shipments.

#3: Avoid unnecessary fees

The PROCESS of importing products is usually VERY COMPLICATED. You might PAY for penalties and EXTRA duties if you make a mistake.

Working with a CUSTOMS BROKERAGE corporation helps YOU calculate profit margin before shipment. They already know exactly how much you need to pay at the border. And their quality service lets YOU avoid penalties.

What does a customs broker do?

what does a customs broker do

Customs clearance services HAVE many responsibilities. Let’s TACKLE what each of them is.

#1: Ensuring your shipment meets all requirements

The government has strict guidelines to which your shipment must adhere. Whether you’re importing or exporting. There are also BUNDLES of documentation needed when shipping.

Your broker ENSURES your cargo meets all the port’s requirements. YOU don’t need to PROCESS anything on your own.

#2: Accurately classifying your goods

All import/export shipments must be classified into the CORRECT shipping code. This is necessary to KNOW the duties and taxes you must pay.

#3: Making customs payments for you

HOW MUCH you pay for customs highly depends on several factors:

  • The item(s) you’re shipping.
  • How heavy your shipment is.
  • Where you’re shipping from.
  • The final destination/country of your imports.

A customs broker calculates the overall costs for you. They PAY DUTIES, taxes, and all payments needed by the government on your behalf.

#4: Resolving any issues at the border

Your broker HANDLES every conflict with your shipments at the border. And RESOLVES the issue in your stead. You won’t have to SET ASIDE your own time until your cargo arrives at your designated place.

Do not hesitate to contact Leeline at any time regarding your shipments from China.

Customs Broker vs Freight Forwarder: what are the differences?

Customs Broker vs Freight Forwarder

BOTH a customs broker and a freight forwarder help you ship your goods.

However, their ROLES are completely different.

A broker for customs helps you with the customs process of your cargo. And its roles are to:

  • Clear your goods at the border.
  • CALCULATE and pay for your shipment’s taxes.
  • Properly classify your goods.
  • Resolve issues at the border related to your cargo’s documentation.

In comparison, FREIGHT FORWARDERS arrange your package’s transportation process itself. This means they CONTACT shipping couriers in your stead. Or even pick up and pack your products for you.

Here are the roles of a freight forwarder:

  • Pick up your goods from your supplier (optional).
  • Offer warehousing services.
  • PACK your products or consolidate them into 1 container/truck.
  • SHIP your goods through your preferred freight type.
  • Arranges and schedule the entire TRANSPORTATION routine of your cargo.
  • Offer you customs clearance services (if they have a broker license).

Yes, freight forwarders can also be customs brokers. BUT brokers are not the same as freight forwarding companies.

How much does a customs broker charge?

How much does a customs broker charge

There’s NO set price when hiring customs brokers. The rates vary DEPENDING on many factors, including the following:

  • Your shipment’s total value.
  • What TYPE OF GOODS you’re shipping.
  • The size of your cargo.
  • Your starting and FINAL destination.

How much you have to pay also CHANGES whether your broker is an individual or an agency.

But in general, here’s how much it usually costs to hire a customs broker:

Basic Formal Entry $125
Annual Customs Bond $550-$600
ISF single-transaction bond$125
ISF for Ocean transportation $125-$150
ISF Filing Charge $35-$45

Note: These RATES are for FCL SHIPMENTS or FULL container trucks. You PAY LESS THAN THE prices above for smaller parcels.

Pro tip: It’ll be CHEAPER to use an ANNUAL customs bond if you ship regularly. But single-transaction bonds are the services to go for if you only ship once or twice yearly.

How to find a reliable China broker?

Step 1: List the goods you’re about to ship.

Some brokers ONLY offer their customs services for common products. And they won’t TRANSACT with you if you ship goods that are:

  • Alive (animals or plants).
  • Perishable (like medicine or meat).

It’s BEST to list the products you’re shipping before contacting brokers.

Step 2: Know your cargo’s size.

Other brokers only accommodate small shipments. While some only transact with BIG FCL shipments.

ALWAYS know your cargo size before asking for quotations. So YOU immediately know if a customs broker can help you or not. You don’t waste ANY TIME.

Step 3: Take note of where you live.

The CUSTOMS process varies between countries. Not every broker is capable of processing documents in your country.

You must take note of your CARGO’s final destination. So it’s EASIER to find brokers with expertise shipping in your location.

Step 4: Ask for recommendations.

Talk with OTHER BUSINESS OWNERS who have shipped from China. And ask them if they know any reputable brokers for your needs.

This is the best way to start finding customs brokers. As this GUARANTEES, that company/agent you contact is high-quality.

Don’t have any business owners to ask in person?

Use online forums instead! You may use REDDIT or QUORA. And ask other businesses about their experiences with Chinese customs brokers.

Step 5: Ask 5 brokers for quotations.

PICK 5 from the recommended brokers you received in the previous step.

Contact all of them. And ask for a quotation while including the following information:

  • The list of goods you made in step #1.
  • The estimated value of your goods.
  • How BIG your shipment is.
  • Where your cargo’s final destination is.

When you receive the replies from each company…

Compare and contrast them. And choose the broker that FULFILLS your customs brokerage needs.
